Summer band begins June 10

O-W Band Director Jim Scheuer reminds all band students and parents that the summer band program will begin on Monday, June 10. Lessons and rehearsals will continue through Thursday July 25. There will not be lessons during the weeks of June 24 – 27 or July 1 – 4. Detailed schedules were mailed home to parents of all band students last week. Any parents or students who did not receive a schedule should contact Mr. Scheuer immediately. The schedule and other details are also available on the school website. Go to (or navigate to Mr. Scheuer’s pages from the school home page) and select the “Summer Band” tab on the left.

Beginning band students are scheduled for two 30-minute lessons each week. Students who have ordered instruments from Schmitt Music will receive them at the first lesson.  Parents of beginners are encouraged to attend the first lesson, if possible, since that is when the students learn how to care for the instruments, and parents may also wish to know this. Parents are also welcome to attend as many other lessons as they wish.

Students entering grades 7 and 8 are scheduled twice each week, once for a 30-minute lesson and once, on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., for a full Junior High Band rehearsal.

Senior High Band students are not required to have lessons, but do have a full band rehearsal on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. In addition to the rehearsals, the Senior High Band participates in two local parades during the summer. The Withee Parade is scheduled for Sunday June 16, with a 1:30 p.m. line up on Division Street, a few blocks north of the railroad tracks. The Owen Parade is scheduled for Sunday July 14, with a 1:00 p.m. line up in the Holy Rosary parking lot.

If a student must miss a lesson, rehearsal or parade, Mr. Scheuer asks that parents let him know in advance by sending a note of explanation or by calling. If he is not available, a message may be left on his high school voice mail (229-2151 ext. 247) or at his home (229-4726).

With Mr. Scheuer’s retirement, the change of band directors will occur during the summer. Mr. Scheuer will be teaching through the Owen parade on July 14, and the new band director, Mr. Ryan Gutsch, will take over beginning July 15. He may also be working with Mr. Scheuer during the week of July 8. This means that parents will need to contact Mr. Gutsch after July 14. The school phone number (229-2151 ext. 247) reaches the band room and will be his school phone at that point. We will try to provide other contact information to students and parents as it becomes available.

All lessons are held in the high school band room. Parents are welcome to attend any or all of the lessons and rehearsals.
